WHAT IS THE INTEGRATED LAND USE (ILU)?

The process of development and implementation of the LIFE Montado-Adapt project has eleven distinct stages.

STRATEGIES:

Diversify crop production by alternating agricultural crops with forest ones, choosing the ones which are tolerant to the expected climate changes;
Diversify cultures and varieties by opting for the most resistant to the adverse climatic conditions and
profitable from an economic point of view.
Act in accordance with international standards for the certification of products;
Improve soil fertility through green manures, mycorrhization, etc;
Diversify, not only in terms of eco-products, but also eco-services.
WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF THE INTEGRATED LAND USE SYSTEM?
It seems impossible to achieve sustainability with the land management systems used today. If the climate has already changed, the systems must also change. It is based on this premise that the LIFE MONTADO & CLIMATE - NEED TO ADAPT establishes as priority the need for adaptation processes to the current and future climatic conditions and the consequences thereof.

THE MODEL OF DEVELOPMENT, IMPLEMENTATION AND REPLICATION OF THE SYSTEM

The process of development and implementation of the Integrated Land Use has the 11 steps below.

Replication is done in pyramid, thereby allowing the transfer of knowledge and cooperation among peers. Below the graphical representation indicating the Pilot Areas covered.

Thus, the methodological calibration for the implementation of the ILU will be done first in Herdade da Coitadinha and, later, the other 11 Pilot Areas of the project will develop and implement their own ILU. After this second phase of implementation, the 11 Pilot Areas will have the necessary knowledge to promote the development and implementantion of the ILU to other landowners.

EXPECTED RESULTS

The 1st group of expected results consists of established adaptation technologies on 1250 hectares of Montado/Dehesa land with a mix of intervention types tailored to specific local/farm conditions, resulting in:

  • Establishment of Integrated Land Use systems on 1250 hectares of Montado/Dehesa land, with combined methods;
  • Safeguarding and improvement of biodiversity functions, including a 10% improved presence of indicator species for bird species and butterflies and a restored plant diversity and structural complexity matching habitat requirements for the Iberian Lynx;
  • Improved socioeconomic benefits of Montado/Dehesa land, including ate least 8 viable income sources for domestic and international markets, 150 Euro per hectare (or 300%) farmer income increase, an employment increase of 1 FTE per 10 hectares and an overall IRR increase to at least 6 %;
  • Climate change mitigation, including a carbon sequestration increase of 1 ton CO2-e per hectare.

The 2nd group of expected results is a fully replication and upscaling system to ensure maximum adoption of tested adaptation technologies, resulting in:

  • Established/Inclusion of self-supporting commercial company to trade Montado/Dehesa products;
  • 11 project partners trained as promoters, each successfully transferred their knowledge to 10 other farmers (110 farmers and 10.000 hectares in total) and support them to design an adequate ILU model for their land;
  • Signed at least 10 cooperation agreements with commercial partners and promote their products at 2 trade fairs;
  • Preparation of Group Certification Process;
  • Created synergies with public and private entities for achieving policies and legislation beneficial to Montado/Dehesa development;
  • Created networks for dissemination, including >10 exchange events with policy makers; 10 meetings with similar projects; a project website with access to social media. Other information like contact & research database, FAQ; 50 articles for science & media and numerous dissemination materials; 5 excursions to project sites; etc.
