Open Day at Herdade da Ribeira Abaixo
20/11/2019

On November 19th, the LIFE Montado-Adapt project visited the EB 2/3 D. Jorge de Lencastre School, where the activities were carried out for the younger audience: the students were advised of the importance of this unique forest ecosystem and had also the opportunity to know many products from Montado/Dehesa, such as cork, pine cones, honey, acorns and derived products.

The afternoon began with a presentation on the theme “Forest for the Future - Promoting forest as a way of mitigating and adapting to climate change in the Montado”, followed by the presentation “HRA's adaptation to climate change – first results”. Already in the field, it was possible to observe these results and some of the measures implemented, such as planting hedges that will serve as a windbreak, natural fence for grazing, shading, and that will also be seed bank for fauna, and techniques of afforestation with indigenous species. All of these measures aim to help create microclimates that will allow water retention, which will help lower the temperature of the space. The day ended with a positive note, because the success rate of plantation survival and the results of these measures were very positive.
