MANAGING ENTITY: ICNF - Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests LOCATION: Mora, Portugal TOTAL AREA: 290 ha PROJECT AREA: 51,2 ha DESCRIPTION: It is not known when the Cabeção’s National Forest (“Mata Nacional de Cabeção” – MNC) was established as well as the origin of its name. However in 1574 (and already with this name) it belonged to the Order of Aviz. In 1835 it was excluded from the sale of national goods and was incorporated since 27 January 1836 into the General Administration of the Kingdom’s Woods.MNC presents unique characteristics, such as the Quercus suber area where several research studies related to the cork oak culture are carried out. Various recreational activities are undertaken by private or public organizations. It has a partial game reserve for wild rabbit and partridge, also serving as a resting place for pigeons. The MNC is considered a “model forest” because it is representative of the region’s ecosystems.
