MANAGING ENTITY: EDIA - Empresa de Desenvolvimento e Infraestruturas do Alqueva, S.A LOCATION: Barrancos, Portugal TOTAL AREA: 1000 ha PROJECT AREA: 208,8 ha DESCRIPTION: “Herdade da Coitadinha” was acquired in 1997 by EDIA, with the aim of developing a compensation project for habitat loss in Montado/Dehesa ecosystems, riparian galleries and Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub, due to the construction of the Alqueva dam. It has FSC Certification (Forest Stewardship Council), which promotes responsible forest management.
This Estate corresponds to the Demonstration Area of the project, so it is here where the implementation of the first Integrated Land Use (ILU) system for Montado/Dehesa took place.
