MANAGING ENTITY: ICNF - Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests LOCATION: Alcácer do Sal, Portugal TOTAL AREA: 952,44 ha PROJECT AREA: 106,5 ha DESCRIPTION: The Valverde’s National Forest (“Mata Nacional de Valverde” – MNV) belonged to the Ara-Coeli Convent, but with the extinction of religious orders, it was transferred to the General Administration of the Kingdom’s Woods, under the Ministry of Navy and Overseas, by Permit of July 24, 1824. In 1919 it came under the administration of the Directorate General of Forestry and Water Services. Since 2012 is under management of the Institute for Nature and Forests Conservation (ICNF).
It is a “Model Forest” (as defined by the Alentejo Regional Forestry Management Plan) and is located in a region also known as the “Stone-pine Manor”. In this context, the stone-pine is the most represented tree species in MNV, with an approximate occupation area of 700 ha, followed by the cork oak that represents about 100 ha. The latter are mainly adult stands, currently managed taking into consideration guidelines that promote biodiversity and carbon retention, by preserving the typical understorey vegetation, as well as protected species or species with relevant importance for nature conservation.
