WHAT IS THE INTEGRATED LAND USE (ILU)?

The process of development and implementation of the LIFE Montado-Adapt project has eleven distinct stages.

STRATEGIES:

	Diversify crop production by alternating agricultural crops with forest ones, choosing the ones which are tolerant to the expected climate changes;
	Diversify cultures and varieties by opting for the most resistant to the adverse climatic conditions and profitable from an economic point of view.
	Act in accordance with international standards for the certification of products;
	Improve soil fertility through green manures, mycorrhization, etc;
	Diversify, not only in terms of eco-products, but also eco-services.

WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF THE INTEGRATED LAND USE SYSTEM?
It seems impossible to achieve sustainability with the land management systems used today. If the climate has already changed, the systems must also change. It is based on this premise that the LIFE MONTADO & CLIMATE - NEED TO ADAPT establishes as priority the need for adaptation processes to the current and future climatic conditions and the consequences thereof.

THE MODEL OF DEVELOPMENT, IMPLEMENTATION AND REPLICATION OF THE SYSTEM

Replication is done in pyramid, thereby allowing the transfer of knowledge and cooperation among peers. Below the graphical representation indicating the Pilot Areas covered.

Thus, the methodological calibration for the implementation of the ILU will be done first in Herdade da Coitadinha and, later, the other 11 Pilot Areas of the project will develop and implement their own ILU. After this second phase of implementation, the 11 Pilot Areas will have the necessary knowledge to promote the development and implementantion of the ILU to other landowners.
